Akira is back in the news with developments on the cyber punk-film project of the live Akira movie. It’s still in the works according to the movie director that was once a part of the project. The film was a project from Warner Brother Studios as a live-action adaptation of the cult 1988 anime and manga from Katsuhiro Otomo.

Director Jaume Collet-Serra

In recent interviews conducted by Coming Soon and Collider, movie director Jaume Collet-Serra (Non-Stop, Orphan and House of Wax) mentioned that he is still working on the Akira movie and hope that it will be his next one to release.

The project was previously at a halt when Warner Bros. stalled the project in 2012 in order to change the script and save money. In 2013 many sources reported on Collet-Serra’s possible return, but he stated that if he were to return he would want to oversee the project. It was also noted that Akira manga creator and anime director Katsuhiro Otomo was potentially going to oversee the project as executive producer.

So we can assume that Collet-Serra is going to be the official overseer of the project. Collet-Serra also told Coming Soon his thoughts on the characters and how he wants to give his own take on them aside from the original anime and manga.

“I hope that I can bring strong characters. In the original source material, I don’t think the main characters are the protagonists… That’s part of the Japanese culture, they never have strong characters. They’re used as a way to move the other philosophy forward.” - Collet-Serra

To evaluate this quote, it can be assumed that he wants to give an edgier, stronger look to the movie. He mentioned that he will have to be “respectful to the source material” and “take the spirit of it and adapt it.” Let’s hope the true essence of the original anime is not lost for the live-action movie instead of falling into the dark, grungy trend Hollywood is seeping into. The concept art by James Clyne above is pretty impressive and could be a nice blueprint.

Give us your thoughts. Do you believe Jaume Collet-Serra is a good fit? Would a Japanese director be a better fit? Do you have a favorite director you have in mind ?

this movie’s pointless since we already got a pretty much updated version of it in the form of Chronicle (2012).

I agree, I never had any interest in Chronicle at first cause I didn’t know what it was but after my buddy made me watch it I was pretty blown away, Akira is written all over that movie.

f**kn….this movie is going to be so Americanized…so destroyed, how much do you wanna bet there’s gonna be a bunch of ‘murica moments in this film? Also, how far off do you wanna bet this films gonna be from the original? pretty sure it’s gonna be unrecognizable after they’re done with it….
