At Salt Lake Comic Con FanX, GamerFitnation got to stop by GoEngineer ’s booth for an interview with Drew Merrill on an technology that he said is revolutionizing the world and industry. GoEngineer works with two different kinds of printers to create 3D objects made of plastics and other materials. A practical use for the printer comes when someone, say an inventor working from his garage or someone who collects cars, needs a part. Someone with a car needing parts that are no longer made could have an engineer design a needed piece on any 3D design software, such as SolidWorks or Google SketchUp. 3D printers can then be used to make practice versions of the part before shelling out the money needed to create the real one.

The engineer gets a true-to-scale piece that they can fit into whatever the object is designed for. This lets the engineer check his design’s accuracy and make necessary modifications before sending it off for the final product’s creation. Fans can also have fun with 3D printing. Merrill said that people can use the technology to create figurines or chess pieces.  Though Merrill had been skeptical about 3D printing when he first learned about it, he now sees the technology gaining ground.  UPS has even talked about putting it in their stores for customers to use.

This technology opens up doors for entrepreneurs, inventors, and amateur designers working from their garage on a tight budget.  The cost of innovation is greatly reduced when they can first go to 3D printing to check the functionality of their product before creating it in the intended material.
