What is Watch Dogs?

Some key information from the game’s official site:

“Set in Chicago, where a central network of computers connects everyone and everything, Watch Dogs explores the impact of technology within our society. Using the city as your weapon, you will embark on a personal mission to inflict your own brand of justice.

Chicago’s overarching network is known as the Central Operating System (ctOS), and it controls almost all of the city’s technology and information - including key data on all of the city’s residents.

You play as Aiden Pearce, a brilliant hacker and former thug, whose criminal past led to a violent family tragedy. While seeking justice for those events, you’ll monitor and hack those around you by manipulating the ctOS from the palm of your hand. You’ll access omnipresent security cameras, download personal information to locate a target, control traffic lights and public transportation to stop the enemy… and more.

The City Is Our Weapon

Watch Dogs takes place in a fully simulated living city. Using Aiden’s smartphone, you have real-time control over the city’s infrastructure. Trap your enemy in a 30-car pileup by manipulating the traffic lights. Stop a train, and then board it to evade the authorities. Narrowly escape capture by quickly raising a drawbridge. Anything connected to the ctOS can become your weapon.

Street Justice

Living in inner city Chicago, where violence is often answered by violence, Aiden has learned how to take the fight to the streets. Deliver blows with your baton, or experience electrifying shoot-outs. Aiden will take on his foes with more than 30 traditional weapons.

High Octane Driving

Luckily, Aiden won’t always need to traverse Chicago’s streets on foot. You’ll get behind the wheel of more than 65 cars to explore Chicago’s vast and intricate roadways.

Dynamic Navigation

Not only does Watch Dogs give you the ability to take advantage of the ctOS, it also allows you to explore the many layers of Chicago itself. Cut through buildings, scale rooftops, and explore the city’s dangerous underground to catch your target.”

Now, words can only do so much to help you understand what Watch Dogs is all about, thankfully Ubisoft has provided us with this video to show you everything that you’d need to know about their newest game.

Announced at E3 2012 Watch Dogs swiftly became a cult favorite. Comparatively E3 2012 was a pretty dull year, with not many new announcements or things to talk about. However, Ubisoft shocked everyone at their press conference by announcing a brand new IP. With not much else to look at everyone started focusing on Watch Dogs due to its creative gameplay and unique design. This got the hype for Watch Dogs going even 2 years before its release.

In this video here you can see the original announcement, teaser trailer, and first gameplay trailer for watch dogs from E3 2012.

Of course the game did not come without its fair share of problems along the way. Watch Dogs was originally supposed to be released on November 19th, 2013, however one month before its release they announced that they were going to push its release back to Q2 2014. It wasn’t until this past March that Ubisoft finally put out an official release date. Here is a press release that Ubisoft put out following the pushed back release date to try to explain their reasoning for pushing the release date back.

“We know a lot of you are probably wondering: Why now? We struggled with whether we would delay the game. But from the beginning, we have adopted the attitude that we will not compromise on quality. As we got closer to release, as all the pieces of the puzzle were falling into place in our last push before completion, it became clear to us that we needed to take the extra time to polish and fine tune each detail so we can deliver a truly memorable and exceptional experience.”

Also, announced in late September of 2013 Ubisoft said that Watch Dogs would run at 30FPS on next-gen consoles. This was seen as very disappointing to some, however others didn’t care. While these announcements outraged many fans Ubisoft still remains optimistic, expecting around 6.2 million copies to be sold.

The game is being released on all major consoles, on May 27th it comes out for PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. However Ubisoft said that they were pushing back the release of the WiiU copy to “Fall of 2014″ due to the game not being fully completed to the best of their ability and not up to their standards. Other announcements that came with the official release date were 8-player multiplayer, PlayStation Exclusive Content, and 1080p resolution on PS4.

Ubisoft is no stranger to open world games, and this one is no exception however it distances itself from other open world games such as Grand Theft Auto in a good way. Unlike other open world games you are able to constantly interact with the city around you and have it influence others as well as yourself. While in other games if you did something wrong and were trying to escape from the authorities you had 2 options, stand and fight or outrun them. Now in Watch Dogs you can have the electronics around you while driving or running to stop others chasing you. Whether it be by having all the traffic lights turn green to induce a traffic jam or have brake poles rise from the ground to have their cars smash into them at the last second there are numerous ways to help escape, and it’s all optional. Plain and simple there’s a lot to do in this game, you’ll need to put aside a lot of time to complete it because Ubisoft says that Watch Dogs will take you up to 40 hours to complete.

Why Is Watch Dogs Such A Big Deal?

I’ve heard a lot of talk of people wondering why Watch Dogs is so important, thinking that this is just another open world game. Well it’s not everyday that a new IP gets released into the gaming world, especially when a company knows that they could just a release a sequel to a former IP and make just as much money with little risk. But that’s the point, developing a triple A title costs a lot of money, and for a company to go out there and gamble on a brand new game when they could potentially lose big is something that you don’t see very much anymore.

Why YOU Should Be Excited

- First and foremost, it’s a brand new game with a whole new world and new gameplay mechanics to explore and delve into. One of the greatest joys of being a gamer  is getting to try out something new for the first time.

- If Watch Dogs does well enough in terms of sales it could become a franchise and we could see a Watch Dogs 2 possibly in the future. The way I see it, anything that expands the gaming industry and gets more people involved is a good thing, it ensures the continuity of our culture and gives everyone a reason to be a gamer.

- Ubisoft is supporting all consoles with Watch Dogs. Every major console is getting this game, even though WiiU’s copy is coming late at the very least it’s still being released on it. So no matter what you enjoy playing on there will be a copy for you out there. That speaks a lot to Ubisoft’s character and quality as a company.
