Sony’s PS4 Is ‘Already Profitable’

Sony says that the PS4 hardware is adding to their profitability margins, even only after roughly 7.7 million units sold thus far. This is an odd occurrence since normally companies will sell their consoles at a loss in order to get a larger install base and allow for the software sold to be where their profit comes from.

Sony President and CEO Kaz Hirai said that “From a profitability perspective, PS4 is also already contributing profit on a hardware unit basis, establishing a very different business framework from that of previous platform businesses,”

This puts Sony in a unique position and gives them the opportunity to have their PS4 be incredibly profitable. With only a few months after its release in November the PS4 has already become this generations top selling console at 7.7 million units. The WiiU rests at 6.2 million units, and the Xbox One, who many would consider to be PS4′s top competitor has 4.5 million units sold.

The console race rages on.

So what do you think? How successful will the PS4 be for Sony? And will they end up on top in this generations console race? Sound off in the comments below to discuss.
