A man in New Zealand recently experienced life-threatening blood clots from playing video games for extended periods of time, this has lead to doctors developing a new term titled “Gamer’s Thrombosis” to describe the condition.

Thrombosis is a medical term that describes coagulation of blood in parts of the circulatory system, this includes the heart, the veins, arteries, and capillaries where the blood clots will form. The man himself was playing games for 8 hours a day for 4 days straight with his legs outstretched. He says that playing like this by the second day made him develop pain and swelling, but he continued to play like that for 2 more days. He had then developed “deep vein thrombosis” which were blood clots that could have ended up killing him if they had reached his heart. Thankfully however, due to many clot removing medications he was able to be cured.

If you’re worried about blood clots or obtaining ‘Gamer’s Thrombosis’ then here are a few ways to prevent blood clots.

Maintain An Active Lifestyle - Simply walking around or doing any form of exercise daily prevent the chances of having blood clots in your lifetime.

Healthy Diet - Along the same lines of an active lifestyle, eating healthy reduces the amount of fats and cholesterol that have the chance to get caught into your circulatory system and cause blood clots.

Keep Your Blood Pressure In Check - Checking your blood pressure regularly and keeping it at healthy levels will greatly reduce your chances of obtaining blood clots. One of the causes of high blood pressure is salty foods and other kinds of fats found in foods.

As gamers we know how addicting games can be and how hard they are to drop at times, but we would like to remind everyone that it is important to take breaks from them every so often, this can prevent blood clots and overall stop ‘Gamers Thrombosis’ from ever being a problem.
