It’s evident that the juggernaut of racing games has returned since this past Friday Mario Kart 8 launched on Nintendo’s Wii U console and on the opening weekend alone has sold over 1.2 million copies of the game.

The King Is Back.

Selling 1.2 million copies in 3 days is considered successful for virtually any game out there. However what truly makes this feat so successful is that the Wii U currently only has 6.2 million consoles sold. This means that 1 out of every 6 console owners now has Mario Kart 8 in their library, and this statistic is sure to only increase. In the UK Nintendo saw a 666% increase in Wii U’s being sold with 82% of those being sold through the Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle.

More importantly though this could show a turn around of fortunes for the Wii U. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has even been quoted as saying that a “single title” could save Wii U, perhaps Mario Kart 8 could be that definitive title. Nintendo of America COO Reggie Fils-Aime also had this to say about the successful launch. “The early response to Mario Kart 8 demonstrates that the best days for Wii U are still ahead. This year’s E3 is just days away, and it will be all about the future games for Nintendo platforms. This milestone is a great place to start!”

Of course this isn’t the first time Nintendo has dealt with poor launches of their hardware. Nintendo’s 3DS had a rough start however after supplying it with a healthy dose of quality games and a price cut it is now doing very well with them selling 44.7 million units and owning 84.4% of the handheld market.

If Nintendo can keep a healthy stream of games coming out like Mario Kart 8 then it could be a real game changer for their console. Of course E3 will be the event that can either turn the tides for Wii U or leave it out to drown.
