Sony E3 2014: A Recap of the Big Reveals and Updates

On June 9th, 2014, Sony got the chance to show gamers their best during their Sony E3 2014 Press Conference. The nearly two-hour long segment hosted a variety of both new and previously announced games. We are here to take those of you who missed it, and those of you who want a summary, on a full recap of the Sony Press Conference.

Sony E3 2014 Lets Destiny Take the Lead

Sony E3 2014 opened a trailer for Destiny, a new game that claims to embody Sony’s vision of community, connection, choice, and visuals in gaming. It was announced that an exclusive PlayStation Beta for the game will start on July 17th this year. It was also revealed that there will be another test, known as Destiny First Look Alpha, that will run from Thursday through the weekend on the PlayStation 4. Sony also promised extra content for the PlayStation 4 as well as an “Exclusive PlayStation Destiny Bundle,” which includes a white PlayStation 4, a white controller, a copy of Destiny, and a 30-day voucher for PlayStation Plus.

The Order 1886

After the hype from Destiny died down, Sony showed a trailer for The Order 1886, a game that takes players back to Victorian London to fight old monsters.


New Studio Debuts its First Game

Sony E3 2014 was delighted to introduce gamers to Pixel Opus, a new studio taken under the wings of Sony Entertainment. The small team has created Entwined, its first game. In Entwined, you guide two souls who are in love yet cannot be together. Using one joystick to lead each soul, you travel through nine “lifetimes” helping them find each other in order to create a dragon to paint the sky. The game is currently available on the PlayStation Store for $9.99.


Infamous Second Son Gets New DLC

Infamous First Light is a new DLC that Sony has made for Infamous Second Son. The company claims that it can be played without a copy of Infamous Second Son, but some exclusive content will be unavailable. It will be available on the PlayStation Store in August of this year.

Little Big Planet 3 Brings New Friends for You and Sackboy

Sony E3 2014 unleashed a big reveal of Little Big Planet 3, leaving the audience thrilled with the addition of three new playable characters: Oddsock, Toggle, and Swoop. Each new character holds unique skills and abilities, making new and entertaining ways  to maneuver through levels. In addition to characters, Sony has added more depth and power ups into the game. Both a trailer and gameplay demo were shown for the new installment, playing strongly on the adorable multilayer aspect of the game. Sony expects to have Little Big Planet 3 on the market in November 2014.


Survive the World of Bloodborne

Bloodborne is a dark new game by FromSoftware. Travel through a Gothic city infested with monsters as you search for a way to dig up its secrets. This game is expected to come out in 2015.


Far Cry 4 Carries Players to Kyrat

To the excitement of many, Sony E3 2014 revealed a gameplay trailer for Far Cry 4. The trailer showcases multiplayer missions, breathtaking scenery, and nuclear elephants. Sony also revealed that PlayStation Network that allows friends to join in on the game without actually owning it. This feature is only available on PlayStation systems. A 30-day exclusive beta run was also announced for the PlayStation 4.


Dead Island 2 Kicks Off

Following the reveal of Far Cry 4, Sony E3 2014 personnel used a trailer to reveal  yet another big game: Dead Island 2.


Diablo III Meets The Last of Us

On August 19th, Diablo fans will have the chance to purchase “Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition” to play through an exclusive dungeon featuring numerous infected from The Last of Us.

Battlefield Hardline Beta Announced

Sony E3 2014 didn’t just reveal a trailer to Battlefield fans; they gave them an exclusive PlayStation 4 beta that is currently going on.


Avengers Coming to Disney Infinity 2

Representatives at Sony E3 2014 were excited to announce that during the launch of Disney Infinity 2, only PlayStation platforms will have access to Marvel’s Avengers characters. A Special Disney Infinity 2 Collector’s Edition will be sold for both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

A New Partnership Brings a Big New Title

Sony E3 2014 revealed another new partnership with Paradox Interactive. A trailer showing Magicka 2 was also released. The game is set to be released on the PlayStation 4.


A Sweet Letter Brings a Sweet Rebirth

Following the reading of a letter written by a ten-year-old girl (or twelve-year- old Tim Schafer) Sony E3 2014 showed heart and announced that they will be remastering Tim’s masterpiece, Grim Fandango, as a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita exclusive.

Devolver Partnership to Bring New PlayStation Exclusives

Sony’s new partnership with Devolver promises to bring many new games to PlayStation owners including: Bro Force, Titan Souls, Not a Hero, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, and The Talos Principle.

Let it Die

A trailer for the upcoming PlayStation 4 game, Let it Die, was shown by the Sony E3 2014 team,  showing a dark and thrilling new game.


The Creators of Journey are at it Again

Under their new company, Giant Squid, the people who brought you Journey are currently working on their next game, Abzu. A trailer was shown, revealing the beautiful, underwater art of the upcoming game.


Travel Where No Gamer has Gone Before

Hello Games has partnered with Sony to bring their Sci-Fi dreams of No Man’s Sky to life. Rather than giving players a vast world to discover, the people at Hello Games are creating an entire universe for exploring. The plan is to start each player out on a different planet, giving everyone a different way and order to experience the adventure and “Journey into Infinity.”


Tech Updates for the Inner Techie

Sony E3 2014 didn’t just bring games to their E3 experience, they brought crucial information as well as new and updated technologies for PlayStation players. Minor updates include: plans to enhance the PS Camera, an announcement that Project Morpheus will be showing on the floor with demos of  Jurassic Encounter, Valkyrie, and Street Luge, a free Broadcasting Set Creation DLC, and the upcoming addition of YouTube to PlayStation 4.

Sony E3 2014 representatives also revealed that Twitch UStream will be coming to PlayStation 4. Twitch UStream will give players the ability to watch and interact with others as they play games in real time. You can either help or harm your fellow players by giving live feedback to their game playing abilities.

Free to Play was another big point of interest for Sony. They announced that more than twenty five games will be released on Free to Play for the PlayStation 4 over the next twelve months. Some of the coming games are: Kingdom Under Fire 2, Planet Side 2, and Guns Up.

PlayStation Now, a new Video Game Streaming application for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, will be open for beta testing in the US and Canada on July 31st, 2014. Not only will this feature be available on PlayStation, but it will also be accessible on select Sony televisions with the use of a Dualshock 3 controller. More than 100 games are currently set to be sent through the cloud and into systems.


PlayStation Vita Takes a Little Time to Shine

Sony didn’t mention much about its handheld system, but hinted of new features and connectivity to make it the best in mobile gaming. Some new games coming to the system include: Tales of Hearts R, Child of Light, Tales from Borderlands, and a full console version of Minecraft with Co-op compatibility.

PlayStation TV to Come This Fall

The PlayStation TV comes with the ability to pair with the PlayStation 4 and play games on a second television in a house via remote play. It will also give access to video and music streaming services as well as PlayStation 3 titles through PlayStation Now. Sony also promises to include almost 1,000 games, including PlayStation Vita titles as well as PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 classics. This new mini system will be available for just $99.00. A bundle that includes the system, a Dualshock 3 controller, an 8G memory card, an HDMI cable, and a voucher for the Lego Movie Video Game will also be sold for $139.00.

Who’s Next When Moral Kombat Returns?

Following the tech portion of Sony’s Press Conference, they showed the premier gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat X with the tagline “Who’s Next?”

New Original Programming From Sony Entertainment

Sony E3 2013 announced that they will be hosting its first ever original series, known as Powers, in December this year. Powers is based off of a graphic novel of the same name and follows two homicide detectives who specialize in solving cases revolving around dead Powers (Super Heroes and Villains). Concept art was shown along with confirmation of teasers being shown throughout the summer. The first episode will be free to everyone, but after that it is a service that will be an added feature for players with PlayStation Plus.

A trailer for the first Ratchet and Clank movie was also revealed by Sony, which is set to be released in 2015. A re-imagining of the first Ratchet and Clank game is also in the works in honor of the film.

Lovers of The Last of Us Rejoice

Sony didn’t forget one of their biggest Games of the Year. A new trailer was released for the remastered version of The Last of Us, set to be released on July 29th, 2014 on the PlayStation 4.


Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

In a heart wrenching debut trailer, Sony revealed the next installment to the Metal Gear Solid franchise: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.


Grand Theft Auto to Join the Last of Us on the PlayStation 4

With many popular PlayStation 3 games coming into play near the end of the systems life cycle, it’s no wonder Sony plans on remastering them for PlayStation 4. Grand Theft Auto 5 also received its own trailer showing enhancements and details made to the game for the PlayStation 4. Sony also assured players that data can be transferred from their previous systems.


New Batman is Taking Wing

The Dark Knight will be making his big entrance on PlayStation 4 in his new game, Batman Arkham Knight. A gameplay trailer was revealed and gamers were informed that there will be exclusive Scarecrow Nightmare Missions on the PlayStation 4 only.


Sony Makes a Big Finish with a Big Surprise

Fans cheered as Sony E3 2014 representatives walked off stage leaving one last game trailer playing to their departure. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was officially revealed by Sony for release in 2015 with a trailer that was sure to leave fans eager for more.
