Evo 2014: Nintendo Joins the Fray

Evo, the Evolution Championship Series, will be hosted this weekend in Las Vegas. Competitive gamers of all ages are getting hyped up for a weekend of rivalry and fun in which players are able to compete in tournaments for various fighting games. Some of the games players will be competing in include: Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Ultra Street Fighter IV, Injustice: Gods Among Us, King of Fighters XIII,  Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Killer Instinct, BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

While all titles in the Super Smash Bros. series hold some impressive weight in the world of competitive gaming, it comes as a surprise to some that Nintendo has decided to be a sponsor for Evo this year. This is because last year, Melee was brought into Evo by a charity drive vote for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. At first, Nintendo tried to shut down the entire Melee portion of the tournament, followed by simply asking for the stream to be removed from broadcast. Thankfully, by the end of the day Nintendo allowed Evo to not only host the tournament, but to stream the footage as well.

This year Evo competitors and watchers won’t have to worry about missing out on any of the melee madness. Given the fact that Nintendo’s newest title in the Super Smash Bros. series is coming out this year, it is good to see them joining in on the hype and publicity of this smashing fighter franchise.
